DHB Hospital Benchmark InformationReport for the Quarter January - March 2008
Date of publication: June 2008
Summary of publication
The Hospital Benchmark Information reports are published quarterly to report on data supplied by the hospital services in District Health Boards (DHBs).
Looking at results in the Hospital Benchmark Information report
Data for the report is collected using specific criteria. Some of the data is adjusted to help make comparisons among DHBs. Therefore, the results must be taken in context and not as absolute.
In parts of the report, targets are set. Some targets in the report are high and are difficult to achieve, but worthwhile because they impact on patient care. Where there are no independent targets, a DHB’s results are compared with the results for all DHBs combined.
You are advised to contact the DHB or DHBs concerned, before drawing conclusions from the information. Note that some of the unfavourable results highlight problems that are known to exist internationally.
Comparing DHBs
Comparisons between DHBs using the report data must be undertaken with caution. There are differences amongst the 21 DHBs: they are of different sizes, they meet different needs, and provide different services. The ages, ethnicities, and health of their populations are unique.
Some DHBs only have one hospital; others have several. For this report, the data from all hospitals in the DHB is combined to give one result for each DHB.
Contact
All data used in the Hospital Benchmark Report is provided by the DHBs. If further information or explanation is required readers are advised to contact the relevant DHB directly.
